The use of technology in a typical "off the grid" profession has allowed our company to more accurately and efficiently gather and process information.
All inventory plots are geo-located, providing real time information in regards to a woodlot's current condition.
This information is then incorporated into management plan maps, treatment prescription maps, timber sale maps, etc.
GIS also allows us to document and incorporate such landscape features as water courses, seeps, trails and even a landowner's favorite hunting stand.
We have also used our GIS/Mapping services to assist landowners in locating and documenting NRCS grant work projects - typically a requirement before final cost-share/grant payments are released.
The world of GIS and mapping technology is constantly changing and improving, but there are pitfalls as well. Understanding the appropriate use and limitations of this technology is key.
Keister Consulting, Inc. staff use their knowledge and experience to "give back" to their profession.
In 2017, Susan Keister and Rob Wink, Phd, with a grant sponsored by New York Logger Training, Empire State Forest Products Association and the Workforce Development Institute created a continuing education course entitled: GIS Technology for the Logging Professionals.
They then further shared their knowledge on this subject through an article published in the Northern Logger magazine.
